Two sets of rings, each perfectly regular, laid over one another slightly apart. Neither contains the figure you can see: it exists only in the disagreement between them. This is moiré, the same ripple that crawls across a striped shirt on television, and it is used to measure gaps far too small to see — a tiny shift in one grid moves the pattern enormously.
