Five separate sources of ink, spreading until they touch. Where two of them meet the boundary does not cross — it swells and joins, so the blots read as one body rather than as five circles. Physics calls that surface tension and computer graphics calls it a metaball. It is why a drop of water landing beside another drop becomes a single, larger drop.
