The rays are the oldest lie in the picture and the most useful one. The sun is a disc; it has no spokes. But drawn as a plain circle it reads as a hole, and drawn with rays it reads as a source — so the spokes went onto Neolithic pottery and never came off. What is being drawn is not the sun, but the fact of it being bright.
